24 hours in Amsterdam from AMS
Schiphol is the layover airport that behaves like a station. The train to Amsterdam Centraal is short, frequent, and the reason this city is on the list.
Use the 24 hours for the canal ring and a walk in the Jordaan, or for one museum with a ticket. Not for a bike, a day trip, or three museums.
Out of the airport
Follow signs for the train, not for a taxi. Centraal is about 15–20 minutes. Buy the ticket in the station. If you are entering Schengen as a non-EU national, do the border first and expect EES to take whatever time it takes that day.
Drop a cabin bag at a hotel near Centraal if the timing works. Carrying it along a canal is how a nice hour becomes a chore.
The plan
A one hour canal cruise is the highest yield booked activity, because you sit down and the city does the work. Book it, or just walk the Jordaan and the ring if you would rather not have a meeting time.
The Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum replaces the cruise if you already hold a timed ticket. Buying one hopefully at the door is a queue, and queues are the enemy of a layover.
What to skip
No bike rental. No Zaanse Schans. No 'quick' look at Haarlem. No Red Light District tour as the entire cultural programme unless that is honestly what you wanted; it is small, it is crowded, and it is not the city.
Keukenhof is seasonal and it is not a 24 hour idea in any season.
Back to Schiphol
Trains run late and often. Check the last one anyway if your flight is very early, and do not aim at the final departure. Be at the airport three hours before a long-haul flight.
A hotel at Centraal makes the return a walk and a train. A hotel deep in a pretty street makes it a longer walk. Pretty can wait for 48 hours.
