Questions

Is 24 hours enough for Istanbul from IST?

Only with the right shape of ticket: arrival by early afternoon, departure the next evening, and a hotel in Sultanahmet. The airport sits well north of the old city. A late landing plus a morning flight is an airport-hotel layover, not a city break.

How long does it take to reach Sultanahmet from Istanbul Airport?

Allow 45–80 minutes by Havaist bus or taxi once you are in the vehicle, and longer in peak traffic. Add immigration and the time to find the stop. The metro reaches the airport but does not drop you in the old city.

What should I skip on a short Istanbul layover?

The Asian side, the Princes' Islands, Cappadocia day trips, and any plan that needs two neighbourhoods on the same afternoon. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque area and the Basilica Cistern are the 24 hour cluster.

Do I need a visa to leave IST?

Many European and UK passport holders, and US passport holders, can enter visa-free for a short tourism stay, often up to 90 days in 180. Other nationalities need an e-Visa or a consular visa before travel. Use the official Turkish sites. A layover exit is an entry.
