DohaDOH · Hamad International Airport
A practical Doha layover from Hamad International: 24, 48 and 72 hour plans built around Souq Waqif, the museums, and a desert that does not collide with your flight.
- Into the city
- 20–35 min by taxi or metro once you are out
- Best window
- Any full day; the city is close enough to use a shorter afternoon too
- Watch-out
- Some passports need a hotel booking or a Hayya visa before they can exit.
- Entry
- Many European passports enter visa-free. Check the official Qatar checker. Do not guess.
Three lengths
One turn of the clock
24 hours
Doha is the Gulf layover that respects your clock. The airport is close to the Corniche, and the two things worth doing on day one sit next to each other.
A night in the city
48 hours
With two nights, or one night and two useful days, Doha can take a second institution or a half day outside the city. It still cannot take both plus a beach club.
A long weekend on a ticket
72 hours
Seventy-two hours lets you do the city properly and leave it for half a day. Put the desert in the middle. Keep the last morning in Msheireb or at the airport.

- Hotels
Stay where you can walk to dinner. In Doha that means Souq Waqif or Msheireb, not a tower you will only see from the lobby.
- Activities
The best hours in Doha are not all bookable, and that is fine. Book the desert or a museum ticket with a timed entry. Wander the souq on your own if you would rather.
- Airport to city
Hamad is one of the easier Gulf airports to leave. The limit is immigration and the visa rule for your passport, not the distance.
- Entry
Qatar is relatively open and still specific. 'European passport' is not one rule. Check your nationality on the official tool before you exit transit.
Questions
Is Doha worth leaving the airport on a layover?
Yes, more often than the other Gulf hubs, because the city is close. Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art are a strong half day. If your passport cannot enter easily, Hamad itself is the layover: stay airside rather than arguing with a visa rule.
Can I see the Museum of Islamic Art and the desert in one day?
Not well. The museum and the souq are the city plan. The desert or inland sea is a separate half day and belongs on a 48 or 72 hour gap, not on the morning you fly.
How do I get from Hamad Airport to Souq Waqif?
Taxi is the simple version and often 20–35 minutes once you are in the car. The Doha Metro also serves the airport; Souq Waqif usually means a change at Msheireb. Check the live map in the station.
Do Europeans need a visa for a Doha layover outside the airport?
Many European passports can enter visa-free, but Qatar's rules are passport-specific. Some nationalities need a Hayya e-visa, a fee on arrival, or a confirmed hotel booking. Use the official Visit Qatar checker before you leave the transit area.
