24 hours in Doha from DOH

Doha is the Gulf layover that respects your clock. The airport is close to the Corniche, and the two things worth doing on day one sit next to each other.

Do Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art. Sleep near the souq if you are leaving the next evening. Sleep at the airport if you fly in the morning.

The pair that earns the exit

The Museum of Islamic Art is compact, serious, and on the water. Give it two hours, not twenty minutes. It is the part of Doha that does not feel like a mall.

Souq Waqif is the walk before or after: lanes, coffee, a meal, and enough life that you do not need a second neighbourhood. The two are a short taxi apart, or a longer but pleasant walk if the heat allows.

What a single day cannot hold

The National Museum of Qatar, the desert, Katara and Lusail are all real. They are also a second day. Adding them to a 24 hour plan means you see four places badly.

A dhow cruise is optional colour in the evening if you are already at the Corniche and the boat returns at a known time. It is not the reason to exit the airport.

Where to base yourself

Msheireb or Souq Waqif puts dinner and the morning walk outside the hotel door. West Bay looks like the skyline and adds a transfer you do not need.

If the outbound flight is before 10:00, go back to an airport hotel after the museum. The city is close, and close is not the same as instant when you are half asleep.

The return

Plan to be at Hamad three hours before a long-haul departure. The terminal is large and well run, and it still takes time.

A pre-booked taxi from the souq is fine. So is the metro, if you have already ridden it once on the way in and you know the change.
