Abu DhabiAUH · Zayed International Airport
Abu Dhabi layover guide from AUH: 24, 48 and 72 hour plans for the Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and a return that does not detour through Dubai.
- Into the city
- 25–40 min by taxi to the mosque or Corniche
- Best window
- A full afternoon and the next morning, with one major sight
- Watch-out
- Dubai is a different city. Prayer times close the mosque to visitors.
- Entry
- Same UAE visa-on-arrival rules as Dubai. Most European, UK and US passports qualify. Confirm.
Three lengths
One turn of the clock
24 hours
Abu Dhabi rewards a layover that chooses. The airport is close enough that a taxi gets you to a major sight without the DXB-style metro project. The sights are not close to each other.
A night in the city
48 hours
Forty-eight hours is the gap that fits both of Abu Dhabi's obvious sights, on different days, with a Corniche evening between them.
A long weekend on a ticket
72 hours
Three days lets you add one outdoor block to the mosque and the Louvre. A desert morning or a few hours on Yas. Adding both, plus Dubai, is how the last day disappears.

- Hotels
Pick the hotel for the ride back to AUH, then for the sight. The Corniche is the all-purpose base. The airport is the early-flight base. Saadiyat is a specialist choice.
- Activities
Two of these are the city. The other two are extras for a longer gap. Book the Louvre. Check mosque hours the same day, because a prayer closure is not a suggestion.
- Airport to city
There is no layover metro to memorise. Official taxis are the tool. The rides are short by Gulf standards and long enough that you still only get one major sight on day one.
- Entry
AUH is the UAE, same as DXB. The visa question does not get easier because the city is quieter. Confirm eligibility, then enjoy the fact that the taxi rides are shorter.
Questions
Can I visit Dubai during an Abu Dhabi layover?
Not on 24 hours, and not as a casual extra on 48. The drive is about 90 minutes without traffic and longer with it. If your ticket is into AUH, spend the layover in Abu Dhabi. Dubai has its own airport and its own guide.
Mosque or Louvre on a 24 hour layover?
Pick one. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the stronger first visit for most people and is a straightforward taxi from AUH. Louvre Abu Dhabi is the right pick if you want a museum and can book a timed entry. Doing both in one day means seeing neither properly.
How strict is the dress code at the Grand Mosque?
It is enforced. Shoulders, arms and legs covered, and a headscarf for women. The mosque provides abayas if you need them. It also closes to visitors around prayers. Check the day's hours before you leave the hotel.
Do I need a visa to leave AUH?
Yes, in the sense that you are entering the UAE. Most European, UK and US passports receive a free visa on arrival, commonly for 30 or 90 days depending on nationality, with a passport typically valid for six months. If you are not eligible, stay airside.
