24 hours in Abu Dhabi from AUH

Abu Dhabi rewards a layover that chooses. The airport is close enough that a taxi gets you to a major sight without the DXB-style metro project. The sights are not close to each other.

On 24 hours, do the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque or Louvre Abu Dhabi. Sleep near the Corniche if you are departing late the next day, or at the airport if you are not.

The choice

Choose the mosque if this is your first time and you want the thing Abu Dhabi does that nowhere else on this list does. Go with covered clothing, or pick up an abaya there. Check prayer-time closures the same morning.

Choose the Louvre if you would rather be indoors with a timed ticket, especially in summer. It sits on Saadiyat Island, a different taxi ride from the mosque. Book the entry.

What does not fit after it

The Corniche is a pleasant extra hour if you still have legs and the hotel is there. Qasr Al Watan is a second sight and belongs on day two.

Yas Island, Ferrari World and Dubai are not 24 hour activities. Dubai in particular will consume the layover in a car.

A base that matches the flight

A late next-day departure: sleep on the Corniche or near downtown, after the one sight. You get a morning walk and a simple taxi back.

A morning departure: do the sight, eat, and sleep at the airport. The capital is close. Close at 06:00 is still a bad guess.

Return buffer

Be at Zayed International three hours before a long-haul flight. The terminal is large and new, and the taxi from the Corniche is often 25–40 minutes before you add a traffic surprise.

Have the hotel call the taxi or use a licensed car. Do not negotiate a Dubai detour on the way.
