Right for departures before about 10:00, and for any layover where you are doing one sight and then stopping.
You can taxi to the mosque and return the same day. That is a legitimate 24 hour shape.

Where to sleep on an Abu Dhabi layover
Pick the hotel for the ride back to AUH, then for the sight. The Corniche is the all-purpose base. The airport is the early-flight base. Saadiyat is a specialist choice.
Corniche or downtown
The best default on 24 hours with a late departure, and on 48 or 72 hours. You can walk at dusk, and both the mosque and the airport are straightforward taxis.
Book flexible. Long-haul arrivals slip.
Saadiyat
Stay here if the Louvre is the reason for the layover and you have at least 48 hours. It is a worse base for a dawn flight and a worse base for a quick mosque visit.
Do not stay on Yas unless you are using Yas. You will spend the cultural hours in taxis.
