48 hours in Abu Dhabi from AUH
Forty-eight hours is the gap that fits both of Abu Dhabi's obvious sights, on different days, with a Corniche evening between them.
Stay on the Corniche or downtown. Saadiyat is the right area only if you are spending both nights next to the Louvre and you accept a longer ride to the mosque.
Day one, the mosque
Do it while you are fresh and while you have time to wait out a prayer closure if you arrive at the wrong moment. The building is the point. Do not rush it for a second stop.
Eat near the hotel afterwards. A drive to a famous restaurant across the island is optional and usually a waste of the only evening.
Day two, the Louvre
Timed entry, a real visit, and out before you are glassy-eyed. The dome and the rooms are enough. The gift shop is not a third sight.
If you would rather not do two cultural interiors, swap the Louvre for Qasr Al Watan or a long Corniche walk. Still not Dubai.
Heat and dress
Summer afternoons belong in the Louvre, the hotel, or a car, not on an uncovered walk you found on a map. Carry water anyway.
Keep a layer for the mosque in the bag even on day two, in case you go back for the evening lighting. That return is a gift of 48 hours and still optional.
The flight
If you depart the evening of day two, leave Saadiyat after lunch and build the three-hour airport buffer from the Corniche, not from a beach club.
If you depart the next morning, the second night at an airport hotel is reasonable once the Louvre is done.
