Entering the UAE from an AUH layover
AUH is the UAE, same as DXB. The visa question does not get easier because the city is quieter. Confirm eligibility, then enjoy the fact that the taxi rides are shorter.
Free visa on arrival for many passports
Most European nationalities, the UK and the US are among those that receive a free visit visa on arrival, commonly for 30 or 90 days depending on the passport. The Dubai Airports list is a practical public list for the same country.
Passports are generally expected to be valid for six months. Overstay fines exist. A layover is short, and the rule still applies if something goes wrong and you are not on the flight.
If you need a visa in advance
Arrange it before travel through a channel the UAE accepts. Do not exit transit to 'ask at the desk' with a long-haul departing in a few hours.
Practical entry
Onward flight details and a hotel address speed the conversation. Some travellers complete an eye scan. Allow time for that inside the three-hour story you already have on the way back, and inside the arrival before your first taxi.
Airside is a complete choice
If you are not eligible, stay in the terminal. One sight you cannot legally reach is not a plan. The mosque will still be there on a trip that starts with the right visa.
