72 hours in Doha from DOH

Seventy-two hours lets you do the city properly and leave it for half a day. Put the desert in the middle. Keep the last morning in Msheireb or at the airport.

You do not need Lusail, a mall, and a theme park to justify the length. The museums are the city.

Three blocks

Day one: Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art.

Day two: desert or inland sea, booked, with a known return. Or the National Museum if you would rather not get in a 4x4.

Day three: the thing you did not choose on day two, at half speed, then the airport. If the flight is before noon, day three is an airport hotel and a slow breakfast.

The desert is the variable

Operators sell long afternoons. Your constraint is the drop-off, not the brochure. If you fly the next morning, be back in the city for dinner and sleep near DOH.

A private car is calmer than a huge group if you are jet-lagged. It costs more. A layover is a bad place to save that particular money and then wait for twelve other hotels.

What to skip even with three days

A day trip that is really a mall. Another skyline viewpoint. Anything that starts with a 90 minute transfer each way.

If you want a second city, you bought the wrong layover. Doha is the destination for these three days.

Bags

Checked-through bags make a souq hotel easy. A full suitcase makes an airport hotel on the last night the better call, with the city days done before that.
