Entering Qatar from a DOH layover

Qatar is relatively open and still specific. 'European passport' is not one rule. Check your nationality on the official tool before you exit transit.

Check the official result for your passport

Visit Qatar's visa page sorts travellers into visa-free entry, visa on arrival, or a Hayya application before travel. The answer includes whether a hotel booking is required.

Passport validity is often three months from arrival, which is different from the six months many people assume from other Gulf states. Read the line that applies to you.

Hotel bookings and Hayya

If the checker asks for a hotel, book a flexible room before landing. An airport hotel counts if the property is accepted. Do not rely on sorting this out at the desk with a departure in six hours.

Apply for a Hayya visa only on the official portal. Lookalike sites sell the same form for a fee you do not need to pay.

Insurance and onward travel

Qatar has required health insurance for some visitors. If the official page asks for it, buy a policy that meets the rule rather than hoping a European travel policy is worded the way they want.

Carry proof of your onward flight. A layover exit is still an entry.

The airside option

Hamad is genuinely pleasant if you stay inside: gardens, quiet rooms, places to eat. If the visa is messy, use the airport. The souq will still be there on a trip that is not squeezed between two long-hauls.
