IST to the city and back

IST replaced Atatürk years ago. Any plan that assumes a quick hop into Sultanahmet is a plan from a different airport. Budget the ride as a piece of the day, not as a transfer you will barely notice.

Confirm you can enter

Visa-free is common and not universal. If you need an e-Visa, it has to exist before you fly, on the official site.

Keep the onward flight and hotel address offline. Immigration at a layover exit asks the same questions as a normal arrival.

Choose the ride while you are still calm

Havaist buses serve several city points, including routes toward Sultanahmet and Taksim. Read the board in arrivals for the current stop, not a blog map.

A taxi from the official rank is the tired option. It can be faster or slower than the bus depending on the hour. It should not be a person who walked up to you with a smile and no desk.

Stay in Sultanahmet on a short gap

Once you are there, walk. The tram is for a single hop if you need it, not an invitation to redesign the day.

The metro line that serves IST is useful for some city connections and is not a door-to-door service to the old city. Do not count on it as your only plan unless you have checked the current interchange and you still have time.

Leave earlier than feels reasonable

Three hours at IST before a long-haul departure, plus 45–80 minutes of travel, plus traffic. Evening departures should leave Sultanahmet in the early afternoon if the roads are ugly.

Morning departures should start from an airport hotel unless you enjoy calculating sunrise traffic.

Havaist bus

The standard public option. Buy the ticket at the airport stop, sit down, and do not expect it to feel like a city-centre airport. Allow 45–80 minutes to the old city once you are moving.

Taxi

Official rank only. Useful with luggage, late at night, or when the bus queue is the thing that will break the plan. The meter and the traffic are both real.

Metro, with limits

A metro line serves Istanbul Airport and connects onward into the city network. It still does not replace the bus or taxi if your hotel is in Sultanahmet.

Use it only if you have looked up the current route the same day. A layover is a bad time to discover two changes and a tram.

Live detail lives on the operator's site: Istanbul Airport (opens in a new tab).
