72 hours in Istanbul from IST

Seventy-two hours is enough to see both sides of the story: the monuments and a neighbourhood that is not performing for you. It is not enough for Cappadocia, and anyone selling you that day trip is selling you an airport inside your layover.

Keep night one and night three easy to leave. The middle day can wander.

A clean split

Day one: Sultanahmet, tickets in hand, hotel in the same streets.

Day two: Galata and Karaköy, or Kadıköy if you want the Asian side for a few hours by ferry. A few hours. Not a move to a new hotel.

Day three: a hammam, a market you actually like, and the ride to IST. If the flight is early, sleep at the airport or leave the city the night before.

Islands, conditionally

The Princes' Islands are a full day and a weather day. They fit 72 hours if you take a morning ferry and you are back in Sultanahmet for an early dinner, with the airport ride still ahead of you tomorrow, not tonight.

If the forecast is bad, Kadıköy is the replacement. It does not need a romantic idea of the day.

What remains a no

Cappadocia by plane is a different holiday. Bursa is a different holiday. A Bosphorus dinner cruise that returns at 23:00 the night before a 07:00 flight is a mistake with music.

Jet lag and hills

Istanbul is walkable and hilly. One big walk a day is plenty after a long-haul. The tram and the ferry exist so you do not have to prove anything.
