48 hours in Istanbul from IST

Forty-eight hours is the first Istanbul layover that feels fair. You still base yourself in or next to Sultanahmet so the airport day is only paid once each way.

Day two can cross the Golden Horn to Karaköy and Galata. It should not cross the Bosphorus for a neighbourhood you will see for forty minutes.

Day one is the old city, ticketed

Do the cistern and the mosque courtyards while you are awake. Queues are the tax on arriving without a time slot.

Sleep in Sultanahmet even if day two is Galata. Changing hotels for one night is a hobby, not a strategy.

Day two is one direction

Galata and Karaköy are the right second act: a tower if you want a view, a walk down to the water, coffee, and back.

A short Bosphorus cruise replaces Galata if you would rather sit down. Book a two hour trip with a fixed pier, not a sunset dinner that returns after the time you needed to be in a taxi.

A hammam is optional and timed

A hammam on the second afternoon is a good use of 48 hours. Book it near the hotel, with a finish time that still lets you eat and pack.

Do not walk in at 21:00 because the street looked inviting. You are getting on a bus to a distant airport.

The return is a booking

Treat the ride back as an activity with a start time. Traffic toward IST in the late afternoon is the failure mode.

Three hours inside the airport before a long-haul flight, plus the ride, plus a buffer. Write the departure time from the hotel on a piece of paper if that is what it takes.
