72 hours in Amsterdam from AMS

Seventy-two hours lets you leave the centre for half a day without giving up the canal and the museum. Haarlem is the easy version. Zaanse Schans is the postcard version. Do one.

The shape

Day one: canals and the Jordaan, hotel near Centraal or on the ring.

Day two: one museum, then nothing ambitious.

Day three: Haarlem or Zaanse Schans in the morning, back after lunch, airport in the afternoon. If the flight is late, you can linger. If it is early, do the outing on day two and sleep at Schiphol or Centraal.

Zaanse Schans without the fuss

Book the excursion if you want the windmills and you do not want to research buses. It is a half day. It is not improved by adding Edam, Volendam and a cheese shop on the same clock.

Go only if the weather is tolerable. Windmills in horizontal rain are a photograph you will not like.

Tulips are a season

Keukenhof is a spring garden, not a permanent attraction. If your 72 hours falls in the weeks it is open and you have tickets, it can be the day trip. In October, do not plan your layover around flowers that are not there.

Still no bike

Three days does not change the advice if you are jet-lagged and you do not know the streets. Walking Amsterdam for three days is a complete trip. Rent a bike on a holiday when nobody is meeting you at a gate.
