48 hours in Amsterdam from AMS

Forty-eight hours is the comfortable Amsterdam layover. One day on the water and in the Jordaan, one day at Museumplein, and a train that never becomes the subject of the trip.

You still do not need a bike. You still do not need a day trip unless you are willing to drop the museum.

Day one, water

Arrive, hotel, canal cruise or a long walk, dinner somewhere you can get into without a performance. Sleep near Centraal or just off the ring.

If the inbound flight was cruel, this is the whole day. The museum will be better tomorrow.

Day two, one building

Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh, timed. They sit on the same square and you still should not do both. Pick the one you will think about later.

The afternoon is for a second walk, not a second institution. Vondelpark if the weather is kind and you already did the Jordaan.

Haarlem, only as a swap

Haarlem is about 15 minutes by train and a better add than another museum if you have already decided against Museumplein. Go in the morning of day two and be back for a late lunch.

It is optional. Amsterdam alone fills 48 hours without anyone needing to rescue you from boredom.

Departure

The train from Centraal to Schiphol is the return. Three hours at the airport for a long-haul. If you are a non-EU national, give EES room on the way out as well as in.

Morning flights: an airport hotel at Schiphol is allowed, even in the easy city. Easy is not the same as instantaneous at 05:40.
