24 hours in Dubai from DXB
Twenty-four hours at DXB is enough for one district done properly. It is not enough for the fountain, the Creek, a beach and a desert. The airport is on the city metro, which is the whole advantage. The disadvantage is Terminal 3, which can take as long as the ride.
Default plan: land, clear immigration, buy a Nol card, ride the Red Line to Al Fahidi, and stay on the Bur Dubai / Deira side of the Creek. Sleep there. Leave Downtown and the desert for a longer gap.
When 24 hours is actually 24 hours
The shape that works is an arrival by early afternoon and a departure the next evening. You then have a late afternoon, a night, and a morning.
If you land after 16:00 and depart before noon, skip the city hotel. Sleep at the airport and do not pretend otherwise. A tired ride to Downtown and a 06:00 return is how layovers go wrong.
The plan: Creek, not the postcard
Al Fahidi is the historical neighbourhood on the Bur Dubai bank. Walk it, cross the Creek on an abra (the small water taxi), and see the Gold Souk or Spice Souk only if you like markets. They are short and they are enough.
Eat near the hotel. Do not start a second district after dinner. The fountain at Dubai Mall is a fine sight and a poor addition: it sits at the other end of the same metro line and it will eat the only evening you have.
What to leave on the aircraft
No desert safari. No Abu Dhabi. No Palm Jumeirah unless the Palm is the only thing you came for, in which case do only that and stay nearby.
The Burj Khalifa observation deck needs a timed ticket and a Downtown plan. On 24 hours it replaces the Creek. It does not follow it.
Getting back
Be inside the departure terminal three hours before a long-haul flight. The metro is frequent, but Terminal 3 arrivals and departures are not next door to each other, and security plus a long concourse is normal.
If your flight is before 10:00, the metro plus the terminal is the risk. An airport hotel, or a taxi you have already ordered, is the calmer return.
