Entering the UAE from a DXB layover

A city guide only applies if you enter the UAE. Staying airside is always the fallback, and DXB is a large airport if that is the honest choice.

The list of eligible passports and the number of days change. Use the official page, then your airline, in that order.

Visa on arrival for many passports

Dubai Airports lists a free visa on arrival for citizens of most European countries, the UK, the US and a number of others. The stamp is commonly 30 or 90 days depending on nationality.

Your passport generally needs six months of validity from the date you enter. Some travellers are sent for an eye scan. That is normal. It still takes time, so do not exit with a connection that only works if immigration is empty.

If you are not on the list

You need a visa arranged before travel, through an airline, a hotel, or another channel the UAE actually accepts. A layover is a bad moment to discover you are in the second group.

GCC citizens have their own rules and do not use the tourist visa-on-arrival route. Residents of other GCC states are not the same thing as citizens.

What to carry

Onward flight details, the address of the hotel if you have one, and any visa already issued. A printed or offline copy survives a dead phone.

Medication: if you travel with controlled medicine, check the UAE rules before the trip. A layover does not make a restriction smaller.

Staying airside

If the passport does not qualify, or the gap is really a long connection rather than a day, stay in transit. Terminal 3 has places to eat and rest. That is a better story than a refused entry.
