SingaporeSIN · Singapore Changi Airport
Singapore layover guide from Changi: the MRT into town, what 24 hours can hold, and why Jewel is not a transit-zone visit.
- Into the city
- MRT from Changi Airport via Tanah Merah, then the East West Line. Taxi about 30 min off-peak.
- Best window
- An evening arrival with the next day still in hand, or any gap that has daylight after immigration
- Watch-out
- Jewel sits in the public area. The SG Arrival Card is free, and it is not a visa.
- Entry
- Many passports enter visa-free for a short stay. Check ICA. The 96-hour transit facility is a short list, not a general rule.
Three lengths
One turn of the clock
24 hours
Changi is the rare airport where staying inside can be the right layover. Use the city when the passport works and the clock still has daylight after immigration.
A night in the city
48 hours
Forty-eight hours is the comfortable Singapore layover. One evening on the bay, one daytime neighbourhood, and a hotel that is not a cross-island commute.
A long weekend on a ticket
72 hours
Seventy-two hours lets you add a second pace without leaving the island. The third day is a gallery, a longer river walk, or one booked outing. It is not a ferry to another country.

- Hotels
The train is good enough that a city hotel is usually right on 24 hours, unless the onward flight leaves before the first useful train. Then sleep at the airport, and check which side of immigration the room is on.
- Activities
Four outings, not a menu to finish. The one that fits the gap is the one you book. The others can wait.
- Airport to city
The train is the default once you have entered. The complications are the border, which terminal you landed in, and the hour the trains stop.
- Entry
Leaving the transit area is entering Singapore. The airport does not issue a visa between flights. If the paperwork is wrong, the city guide stops at the glass.
Questions
Is Singapore realistic on a 24 hour layover?
Yes, if you can enter. Changi to Marina Bay is a train and a transfer, or a taxi of about 30 minutes off-peak. Use the day for Gardens by the Bay or the civic district and the river, not for Sentosa as well. If the gap is only six or seven hours, a three-hour car loop from the airport is the tight version, and it is priced for the car, not per person.
Can I visit Jewel without entering Singapore?
No. Jewel, including the Rain Vortex and Canopy Park, is in the public part of the airport, not in the transit zone. Reaching it on an international connection means clearing immigration, then clearing departure immigration and security again to fly. If your passport has to stay airside, stay in the terminal. Changi is built for that.
Do I need a visa and an arrival card?
They are different things. The SG Arrival Card is free, it is not a visa, and ICA requires it within three days before arrival if you will clear immigration. Staying airside does not require it. A visa, if your passport needs one, has to exist before you fly. The 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility covers only the nationalities and documents ICA lists, and it does not guarantee entry.
How do I get into the city and back?
The MRT station is under Terminals 2 and 3. From Terminal 1 it is a walk through the links. From Terminal 4, take the terminal shuttle first. Ride to Tanah Merah and change to the East West Line toward the city. Trains do not run all night. Changi publishes a last connection toward the city late in the evening. A taxi from the arrival stands is the late-night answer. Be back at the airport three hours before a long-haul departure.
