Kuala LumpurKUL · Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Kuala Lumpur layover guide from KLIA: the Ekspres to KL Sentral, what a day can hold, and the arrival card that is not a visa.
- Into the city
- KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral in 28 minutes, then another ride to KLCC.
- Best window
- A full day, not a six-hour connection
- Watch-out
- KLIA and KLIA2 are different stations on the same line. The transit tour does not include the tower tickets.
- Entry
- Visa rules are by passport. The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is free, required for most foreign visitors, and not a visa.
Three lengths
One turn of the clock
24 hours
KLIA is not a city airport. The train is fast and the city is still a second ride away. Twenty-four hours holds one timed ticket.
A night in the city
48 hours
Forty-eight hours is the first gap that can hold the caves without lying about the airport. One day in the centre, one morning at Batu Caves, and a train you already trust.
A long weekend on a ticket
72 hours
Seventy-two hours is enough to stop rushing and still not enough for a hill station. Stay in the capital. The distance from the airport has already spent the spare hour.

- Hotels
The express train is good enough that a city hotel is right, except when the flight leaves before the first one. Then sleep at the airport.
- Activities
The airport is the constraint. Anything that starts downtown still costs you the Ekspres and the onward ride, twice.
- Airport to city
Take the express train. The road into Kuala Lumpur is the part of this layover that goes wrong.
- Entry
Malaysia does not use one rule for every passport. The arrival card is a second rule, and it is not the visa.
Questions
Is Kuala Lumpur realistic on a 24 hour layover?
Only as one ticket in the centre. KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes, and you still have to get to KLCC. Petronas or KL Tower fits. Petronas plus Batu Caves plus a food tour does not. The airport transit tour is about seven hours and should be booked at least 48 hours ahead.
Which terminal is the train in?
KLIA Ekspres serves both the main terminal (T1) and klia2 (T2). The ride between them is about three minutes. Long-haul flights are usually in T1, but check the airline. The non-stop run to KL Sentral is 28 minutes and, in normal hours, every 20 minutes. From 23:00 the trains stop at the intermediate stations. The last trains are around midnight.
Do I need a visa and an arrival card?
They are separate. Malaysia's Immigration Department publishes who needs a visa. A set of nationalities, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland, are visa-exempt. Others need an eVisa before they fly, and the number of days is not the same for every exempt passport. The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is free, is not a visa, and most foreign visitors must submit it within three days before arrival.
Does the KLIA transit tour include the Petronas deck?
No. The tour picks up at KLIA or klia2 and drives past Batu Caves, the King's Palace, the National Mosque, Merdeka Square, and the towers. The tower tickets are not in it. Book at least 48 hours ahead, and do not plan it inside a six-hour connection. The airport is far enough that the day wants seven or eight hours.
