KUL to the city and back

Take the express train. The road into Kuala Lumpur is the part of this layover that goes wrong.

Enter, if you are entering

The MDAC comes before the train. So does the visa question. This page is not an airside connection.

KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral

The station is in the terminal. T1 to KL Sentral is 28 minutes non-stop in regular hours, every 20 minutes. T1 to klia2 is about three minutes if you have landed at the wrong building.

From 23:00 the trains call at the intermediate stations, and the service runs later, until about 01:00 from the airport side. First trains from T1 are around 05:00. Buy before you board. A ticket is valid for a limited time after you enter the gates.

The second ride

KL Sentral is not KLCC. Continue by LRT, monorail, or a metered Grab to the hotel. That hop is part of the journey, not a detail.

A taxi all the way from KLIA looks simpler and then meets traffic. Use it only when the train has stopped or you are a group with more luggage than the Ekspres is fun with.

Back to the right terminal

Sentral to T1 or T2. Know which one the airline uses before you are on the train. Three hours in the departure terminal after that.

Early flights: sleep at the airport. The 05:00 train is for people whose flight is not at 07:30.

KLIA Ekspres

Default. 28 minutes, non-stop, to KL Sentral, until late evening when it starts making stops. Not a taxi.

Taxi or Grab

The exception. Official or app-booked, never a driver who offers a city tour beside baggage claim. The train is faster until it is closed.

What not to do

Do not confuse KLIA with klia2. Do not start for Genting. Do not book the seven-hour tour inside a short connection.

Live detail lives on the operator's site: KLIA Ekspres (opens in a new tab).
