FrankfurtFRA · Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt layover guide from FRA: the S-Bahn to the Hauptbahnhof, a river hour or the Römer, and the same Schengen border as Paris.
- Into the city
- S-Bahn S8 or S9 from the regional station to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in about 12–15 minutes.
- Best window
- Any gap with an afternoon in the centre and a train that is not the last one
- Watch-out
- The long-distance station is the wrong one for a city hop. EES can slow a non-EU entry. The visitor centre is landside.
- Entry
- Schengen, like Paris and Amsterdam. EES has been fully in use since 10 April 2026. ETIAS is not open.
Three lengths
One turn of the clock
24 hours
Frankfurt is a small centre attached to a large airport. That is why it works. The S-Bahn is the method. The old town is the point.
A night in the city
48 hours
Forty-eight hours is a night in the centre and a second pace. One booked thing. The other day is walking.
A long weekend on a ticket
72 hours
Seventy-two hours is not a licence to ride to Heidelberg and call it a layover. The centre still has a third day in it.

- Hotels
The train is so short that a city hotel is usually right. The exception is a departure before about 08:00.
- Activities
Frankfurt does not need a stack of tickets. One hour on the river, or one morning on foot, is the city.
- Airport to city
There are two railway stations at FRA. The regional one is yours. The ICE station is for a different journey.
- Entry
Germany is in Schengen. Entering from a layover uses the same rules as entering on a holiday. You simply have less time to discover that the passport was the wrong one.
Questions
Is Frankfurt realistic on a 24 hour layover?
Yes. This is one of the short city hops. S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 leave the regional station under Terminal 1 and reach Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in about 12 to 15 minutes. Use the day for the Römer or a river cruise of 50 to 100 minutes. The English walking tour starts at 10:00 and takes three hours, so it only fits if you can be at the meeting point then.
Do I need ETIAS to enter Frankfurt from a layover?
No. ETIAS is not operating and no applications are being taken. The European Commission will announce a start date months ahead, on travel-europe.europa.eu. Non-EU visa-exempt travellers do meet the Entry/Exit System, fully in use since 10 April 2026. Travellers who need a Schengen visa must already have one. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens use the EU lane.
Can I visit the airport visitor centre without entering Germany?
No. The Fraport Visitor Center is in Terminal 1, Departure Hall C, in the public hall. That is landside. Reaching it from an international transit connection means passing border control and entering Germany. It is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with a break from 13:30 to 14:30. Confirm the hours on the day. It is the short visit for someone who is already entering, not an airside time-killer.
Which station at the airport do I want?
The regional station, Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof, for the S-Bahn into the city. The long-distance Fernbahnhof is for ICE trains and is the wrong door for a layover hop. From Terminal 2, use the airport people mover to Terminal 1, then follow S-Bahn signs. Buy an RMV ticket before you board.
