72 hours in Frankfurt from FRA

Seventy-two hours is not a licence to ride to Heidelberg and call it a layover. The centre still has a third day in it.

The shape

Day one: Römer and the hotel.

Day two: the cruise or one museum on the riverbank.

Day three: the thing you skipped, in the morning, then the airport. If the flight is early, sleep at FRA or the Hauptbahnhof and do not invent a morning excursion.

The day trip you are not taking

Heidelberg is about an hour by train and a full day once you are there. The Rhine is the same kind of commitment. On a layover they compete with the flight. They lose.

Mainz is closer and still optional. Frankfurt alone fills three days if you stop performing.

One booking

Cruise or walking tour. The car is the third choice, for people who want the airport handled and will split a group fare. The visitor centre is the choice that never reaches the Römer.

The border

Three days does not make the Schengen border casual. EES on the way in can be slow the first time. Build that into day one, not into the return.
