24 hours in Frankfurt from FRA
Frankfurt is a small centre attached to a large airport. That is why it works. The S-Bahn is the method. The old town is the point.
Twenty-four hours is the river or the Römer. It is not a castle an hour away.
Out of the airport
If you are entering Schengen as a non-EU national, the Entry/Exit System happens first. Allow for it. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens use the EU lane.
Follow signs for the regional station and the S-Bahn, under Terminal 1. S8 or S9 to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof takes about 12 to 15 minutes, and the trains continue through the city. Get off at the Hauptbahnhof for a station hotel, or ride on toward Hauptwache if that is closer to the room. Check the RMV board. Do not wander into the long-distance station.
The plan
The river cruise leaves from the Eiserner Steg, next to the old town: 50 minutes up or down the Main, or 100 minutes for both, with commentary in English and German. It is the booking that survives jet lag.
The English walking tour meets at 10:00 and takes about three hours through the Römer, the rebuilt old town, the cathedral, and the bridge. Take it only if you can make the start. A self-guided hour on Römerberg is the version for every other arrival time.
What to skip
Heidelberg, the Rhine valley, and a private car tour, unless the car tour is the entire gap and the gap is six hours or more. The car is priced per group, from about $382, and it still requires immigration.
The visitor centre does not save you the border. It is a public-hall exhibit for a short connection you are already entering the country for.
Back to FRA
The same S-Bahn, to the regional station, three hours before a long-haul. Buy the ticket. Inspections are real and the fine is dull.
A very early flight belongs to an airport hotel. The trains start early. They are still the wrong bet at 05:40 with a bag drop.
